Our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, DeVere N. Hess, 81, returned to his loving Heavenly Father on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 in the Salt Lake Regional Hospital. He was born on May 1, 1932 in Plymouth, UT to Ervin and Zella Agnes (Nish) Hess. DeVere married Hazel Archibald in the Logan LDS Temple on February 28, 1951.
DeVere has lived in Arco, ID; Blackfoot, ID; and Plymouth, UT. He attended Plymouth Elementary, Garland Elementary and Bear River High School. He worked in construction and at Murdock tooling and engineering, U and I Sugar Factory and Thiokol. DeVere retired from Thiokol in Promontory in 1993. He served his country in the Army and was discharged honorably after two years.
He was a handi-man and enjoyed wood working, clock making with scroll saw and wood carvings. Some of DeVere’s greatest achievements were receiving the Thiokol Silver Snoopy Award and reconstructing the Plymouth Cemetery, where he labored along with his family and Ray Udy, to make it what it is today. He was a member of the Belmont 1st Ward and served as a Scout Leader, Executive Secretary, Sunday School President and in the Young Men. Devere enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting and was an avid Bear River High School sports fan. He was dubbed “Papa Bear”. DeVere enjoyed doing anything that involved his family.
DeVere and Hazel enjoyed retirement in Quartzsite, Arizona for 14 years, making many memories and wonderful friends. Each year they enjoyed going from home to home at Christmas time as Santa and Mrs. Santa, brightening each person’s day.
DeVere is survived by his wife, Hazel Archibald Hess; three sons, Richard (Kasie) Hess, Garland; Tommy (Kim) Hess, North Logan; and Jimmy (Kristy) Hess, Tremonton; one daughter, Julie Ann (Larry) Davison, Bear River City; one brother, Cleon Hess, Tremonton; 20 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Zella Agnes Hess; and siblings, Orlin, Ellis, Gerald, Claire, Verna, Lamar and Jay.
