Emma Gardner Schoenfeld, 99, died January 1, 2016 due to causes incident to age. She was born November 12, 1916, in Deweyville, Utah, to James Alva and Harriet Dewey Gardner. She attended the old Deweyville Elementary School until eighth grade and then went on to Bear River High School in Tremonton.
After graduating from beauty school in Ogden, she moved to Winnemucca, Nevada, for her first job. There, she met Vern Schoenfeld. They were married March 21, 1940, in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Winnemucca, Las Vegas, and Lovelock, Nevada, and retired to Deweyville, Utah. Emma was a beautician until she and Vern retired. She continued styling hair in Deweyville for friends and family until she was well into her 80s.
She raised two children, was active in the LDS church, and supported Vern in his many business, church, and civic duties. Emma served faithfully in her Church callings as Relief Society president three times, stake Primary president’s counselor, early morning seminary teacher, ward choir leader, and as a teacher in various auxiliaries. She and Vern served a mission to the Laie Temple Hawaii Visitors’ Center. Emma played the trumpet and had a lovely alto voice. She loved to crochet, sew, bowl, and square dance. She was an excellent cook and a beloved “Grandma Schoenie”.
Emma is preceded in death by her husband Vern (1998), daughters Sharon (1941) and Diana (1955), brothers Bill and Horace Gardner, and sister Veda Peterson. Survived by daughter Valorie Jensen (Russell, deceased), Pleasant Grove, Utah, and son Mike (Jessie), Highland, Utah. Grandchildren include Eric (Nina) Jensen, Tooele; Diana (Bill) Bromley, Pleasant Grove; Sydnee (Gary) Cannon, Ivins; Mark (Christa) Schoenfeld, East Helena, Montana; Emily (Ryan) Norman, West Point; Scott (Martha) Schoenfeld, Provo; and John (Whitney) Schoenfeld, Orem. 26 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 8, 2016, in the Deweyville LDS Chapel, 10750 North Highway 38, at 11 a.m. There will be a viewing Thursday, January 7, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Rogers Taylor Funeral Home, 111 North 100 East, Tremonton, Utah, and Friday prior to the service at the Deweyville Chapel from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Deweyville Cemetery.
