Gary Valoy Frandsen

August 10, 1935 — March 31, 2025

Gary Valoy Frandsen, 89, finished his earthly labor, and returned to the other side of the veil on Monday, March 31, 2025. He was living in Brigham City, Utah at the time of his passing, and he was surrounded by his loving family and a dear friend.

Gary was a man who wanted to be prepared and to avoid placing burdens on anyone, so, several years ago (and before several more great and great, great grandchildren were born), he penned his own obituary. Here are his words:

“Born Aug. 10, 1935 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah to Willard Edgar and Mary Naomi (Jensen) Frandsen in the Frandsen family farmhouse.

Grew up there and learned how to be good to others and work hard. Loved Mom and Dad.

Met the love of his life in Nephi, Utah, Janice Mower, who made his life complete. They were married Aug. 2, 1952.

They had 6 great children – Kristy, Kathleen, Garaleen, Janis, Bill, and Bobbi Jo. He loved his wife and family with all of his heart. He has 23 grandchildren and 34 greats. He loved them all dearly.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and served in several callings.

He loved this country and where he lived. I am proud to be an American.

Served Snowville as Mayor and Town Council member for over 28 years. Served as member of Curlew Rodeo Ass(ociation), Water Board President, Council for the Aging - Northern Utah, Box Elder County Weed Control, Box Elder Mosquito Abatement.

Was a true and faithful Democrat.

Loved good horses, and had several good ones. Had good dogs. Loved raising a few good sheep.

But mostly loved my wife, Janice, and all our family and all my good friends.

May God always bless America.”

Pretty tough to top that humble self-portrait! And though we can think of a heck of a lot more to add, we only want to say that if you knew Gary, you probably loved him and laughed out loud at his humor and his story-telling. If you had the good fortune to be his friend, you probably learned what the word “friendship” means by the example he set. If you worked alongside him, you likely learned to understand what good work ethics looked like. And, last, but certainly not least, if you were his child or any other family member, you learned about love, respect, and kindness, because he said it over and over that what he wanted most in life was for his family to stay close, to get along, and to be kind and grateful toward others.

Gary is survived by his six children – Kris Liljenquist, Kate (Floyd) Powell, Garaleen (James) Parks, Jan (Chubb) Munns, Bill Frandsen, Bobbi (Jason) McGraw, 25 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren, 1 great, great grandchild, and a few more itty bitty great great grandchildren on the way. He is also survived by his loving sister-in-law, Dianne Goelz Shumway (Dave).

Gary was preceded in death by his sweetheart, Janice, his parents, and his brothers, Bill, Jay, Burr, and Sherrell. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Kathleen, Clara, and Bonnie.
