Gary Kent McCurdy, Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on October 12, 2024, at the home of his daughter in San Mateo, CA at the age of 89. He was born on September 26, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Howard E. and Martha Marie McCurdy. On August 27, 1955, he married Maralyn Mae Knudsen and together they built a loving family in California.
Gary was raised in various cities in Northern Utah where he graduated from Ogden High School in 1953. After graduating high school, Gary moved to California with his parents. At a young age, he learned to work hard with a variety of occupations including a volunteer at Yellowstone National Park, a janitor at Ogden High School, a night guard for the railroad, and finally he started as a janitor at Pacific, Gas and Electric (PG&E) and worked his way up to Operating Superintendent of Electric Operations in San Francisco, CA. He was blessed to retire at the age of 51 and enjoyed 38 long years in retirement.
Gary loved telling stories to anyone who would listen and would even strike up conversations with people on the streets. His family was very important to him. He never missed a birthday where he would call and sing Happy Birthday to them on the phone. He had a passion for bowling for which he continued to do up until he was diagnosed with cancer. He loved hot rods, working on cars, building models, collecting trains, hunting, fishing, camping, taking long drives where he would turn down every side road, and spending time with his animals.
Gary is survived by his wife of 69 years, Maralyn McCurdy of Pacifica, California, his children, Michele (Mike) McCamish, Gregory McCurdy, Kevin McCurdy, Mickie (Mike) Reimers, and Gary (Shelly) McCurdy; 14 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren with 2 more on the way. He is also survived by 3 nieces and 2 cousins and their families as well as many long-time friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Marie McCurdy; brother, Fred McCurdy; sister Bonnie (Jack) Senger; and his niece, Nita Millen.
Funeral services for Gary will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, 2:00 pm at Rudd Funeral Home-Tremonton, 111 N 100 E, Tremonton, UT, 84337. Immediately following the service, the interment will be at the Deweyville Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in California.
