Gilfred Warren Smart, Jr

Gilfred Warren Smart Jr., Master Mason, age 80, passed away peacefully in his home on October 10th, 2024, surrounded by family. Born to Gilfred Sr. and Noma Smart August 5th, 1944, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. 

Gil lived a life of service, kindness, and passion. A loving and thoughtful man, Gil was known for his tender heart and generous spirit. 

He is survived by his brother Roger (Dorthy) Smart and sister Debra (Fred) Kovach, both of Idaho Falls; his children Jonathan Smart, Melissa (Jeremy) Nelson, and Anna Warren; his 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. 

He is preceded in death by his parents Gilfred Sr. and Noma, his sister Lola Bastible, his wife Linda Smart, his sons Scott Smart, Brian Smart, Chad Davis, and Gilfred Smart III, and grandson Bryce Warren. 

Gil was a natural leader, with a passion for serving his community. In the 1970s, he began working with the JC’s while building his career in retail in Idaho Falls. After marrying his beloved wife, Linda, he continued to work in retail stores and then in 1980s the couple moved to Tremonton, Utah, where Gil became the owner of NörLunds Clothing Store. Gil’s dedication to the community continued as he served as president of the Bear River Chamber of Commerce in 1983, before becoming mayor of Tremonton in 1986. As mayor, he played an instrumental role in overseeing the highway project that connected I-15 and I-84, a legacy that remains. 

When not serving his community, Gil found peace in the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman who spent countless hours on the waters in Utah and Idaho, with some of his favorite fishing spots being Tin Cup, Sheep Creek, Daniel’s, and Red Banks. 

Gil’s love for gardening was also well known—his green thumb produced beautiful tomatoes and vibrant flowers that were admired by many. 

Services to honor Gil’s life will be held at the Masonic Lodge in Corinne, Utah, on Sunday, October 27th, at 1:00 PM. 4055 West 2350 North Corinne, Utah  84307.

Gilfred Warren Smart Jr. will be remembered as a devoted family man, a leader in his community, and a man whose tenderness and wisdom touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
