Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, Jay Dee Westergard, 82, passed away surrounded by his loving family, on August 6, 2015, after a courageous battle against cancer.
He was born in Garland, Utah to Neph and Vera Shaffer Westergard. He married his sweetheart, RoWane Thomas on September 12, 1951 in the Logan LDS Temple. Jay’s life on Earth was full of service, faith, love and family. The joy he found in his family was manifested every day in the moments he shared with them.
Jay grew up in Garland and graduated from Bear River High, and then attended Utah State where he studied mechanics.
He was talented in many occupations. He was a gas station attendant, mechanic at Westergard Garage, U & I Sugar Factory, Job Corps, where he taught for ten years. He retired from Thiokol, August 1992, where he was a Property Manager. Jay was also the President of Utah State Firemen’s Association 2002-2003.
Over the years Jay received many awards: Jay served in the Korean War, J.C. Distinguished Man of the Year Award, President of Utah State Firemen’s Association, Garland Fire Chief, 56 years of firefighting service, 2002 Olympic worker, antique Museum Board. And was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Utah Firemen’s Association.
He served in many church callings. Jay served our country in Germany during the Korean War. He had many callings with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he was in the Young Men’s Presidency, High Council for twelve years, Clerk in Bishopric and Sunday School President.
Jay loved all sports, baseball being his favorite. He announced Bear River High School games for many years. Some of Jay special times were watching his kids, grandkids and great grandkids participating in sports, he loved supporting each and every one of them in any sport or activity.
Survived by: RoWane Thomas Westergard (wife), 1 brother Brent (Susan), 1 sister-in-law LaNette (JoDell), 1 brother-in-law L.D. (Syd), 2 sons Cole (deceased) (Shanna), Blair (Kelli), 2 daughters Lyn (Kerry Austin deceased) (Husband Butch) ,Autumn Rogers( Andrew). Eleven grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday August 10th at 11:00 at the Garland Tabernacle 140 West Factory. A viewing will be held Sunday August 9th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Garland Tabernacle and from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Monday August 10th.
