Joan R. Brockbank-Startin

July 21, 1938 — June 23, 2024

As she was surrounded by family, our beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Joan R. Startin, 85, of Riverton, returned to our loving Heavenly Father on June 23, 2024, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Joan was a free spirit who lived a life full of love for nature, adventure, and family. She had a particular fondness for animals and found great joy in nurturing and caring for them. She welcomed change with open arms and faced challenges head-on with an incredible sense of optimism. Joan had a strong work ethic and was a shining example of service, joy, fortitude, spirituality, and love to all with whom she interacted. She bore a strong testimony of the Lord and was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Joan was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on July 21, 1938, to Ward and Lucille Rasmussen. She grew up in the Sandy-Draper area of the Wasatch Front and attended Jordan High School. Her family lived on a farm where her father, Ward, worked as a butcher. Her mother, Lucille, was a passionate genealogist before the age of digital records when genealogy was much more difficult.

Joan married Bernard Park Brockbank Jr. on September 14th, 1955. They were married for 27 years, shared 7 children together, and later divorced.

On February 29th, 1992, Joan married Ron Startin in Murray, UT. They were later sealed in the Manti, Utah temple. They shared 29 years together before Ron passed away in September of 2021.

Throughout her life, Joan prided herself on being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and on raising her children. She thrived on time with family and looked forward to every chance she got to spend time with them.

Joan is survived by her children: Wendy Brockbank, Bernard Brockbank III (Virginia), Robert Brockbank (deceased, survived by Robert’s wife Susan), Nada Philipoom (Dwight), Melinda Ingram (Marc), Elizzabeth Perkins (Clayton), and Marianne Terry. She is also survived by 32 grandchildren and 93 great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her siblings Martha Harding and Holly Ruckert.

Joan was preceded in death by her son Robert, brother Ward B. Rasmussen, and husband Ron.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, June 29, at 11:00 a.m. at Rudd Funeral Home (formerly Rogers & Taylor), 111 N. 100 E., Tremonton, UT. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Portage Cemetery in Portage, UT.
