Josephine Ellen (Joey) Bowcutt passed quietly in her sleep on August 14th, 2010 at the home of her daughter Jayne Goodsell. Joey was born August 28th, 1925 in Salt Lake City. Her parents were Harold (Pete) Peterson, and Hilda Marie Forsberg Peterson of Salt Lake. Joey spent her youth in the Salt Lake City area, and went to the local schools, graduating from Granite High School. She attended the University of Utah until her parents moved to Garland, Utah. She then became an “Aggie” and attended two more years at Utah State. Joey married Virgil D. Bowcutt on April 16, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple and for a time lived in Helper Utah. They soon returned to Tremonton where they would spend the rest of their lives. Both Joey and Virgil graduated from the Colorado School of Floral Design in Denver and became members of the Utah State Floral association. They were FTD florists, and through this association they traveled the world, and became fast friends with other FTD members. On October 22, 1949 they opened the Rogers-Bowcutt Floral and Gift Shop near Rogers Mortuary; they soon purchased the Rogers interest in the business and moved to Main Street. Later they bought and remodeled a house West of the Mortuary, where they operated Bowcutt Floral for over 30 years. Joey and Virg bought Gephart’s Department Store from Virgil’s Uncle Fred and Aunt Louise Gephart, and transformed it into the Bowcutt Reception Center. They hosted hundreds of weddings, receptions, anniversaries and parties together until Virgil became ill in the late 1980’s.Virgil died on September 17, 1988 and Joey continued to operate the center with help from her daughter Jayne until 1995. Due to Alzheimer’s disease, Joey spent the last 18 months living with her daughter and son-in-law. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she served in several positions, particularly with the Young Women’s program. She was dearly loved by all who knew her, and will be terribly missed. Proceeding her in death were her parents (Pete and Hilda), her husband (Virgil), and her brother (Gerry). She is survived by two children. Jayne (Mike) Goodsell of Tremonton, and Scott (Melanie) Bowcutt of Garland, and one Grandson, Justin Bowcutt of Garland. The family would like to give special thanks to Karen, Elaine, Lori, and others from Hospice who was so kind and helpful these last few months. A viewing will take place on Wednesday, August 18th from 11:00 to 12:00 a.m. at Rudd funeral home in Garland. Following the viewing, a short service will be held for family and friends. The burial will be in the Bothwell Cemetery.
