Larry D Rhodes passed away in Kanab, Utah on Friday, July 19th, 2024 at the age of 87. He was born September 26, 1936 to Arnold and Marie Hall Rhodes of Garland, Utah. He married Joyce Young Rhodes on May 5th, 1961, in the St. George Temple and they spent 62 years together, raising one daughter and six sons.
Larry spent his growing up years on the family farm raising animals, growing sugar beets, alfalfa, and a variety of vegetables for seed. He graduated from Bear River High School in 1954, then received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Utah State University in Logan, Utah, in 1958.
His employment began as a surveyor at the Glen Canyon Dam Site, then as a lab concrete controller and construction supervisor. From there, his work took he and his family to Ogden, Garland, Duchesne and Vernal all in Utah, then to Grand Junction Co., moving to Kanab upon retirement after 36 years of service with the US Bureau of Reclamation.
In 1960, Larry served three months active duty in the Marine Corp in San Diego, CA, with his remaining military obligation in the inactive reserves. He served in a community fire department, was an active member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers and may still be an avid fan of the Utah Jazz and NY Yankees.
His membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints led him to serve as a bishop, as bishop’s counselors, in scouting programs, on Stake High Councils and to serve two missions with his wife, and as an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple. He shared his testimony by living it.
His family learned to fish, hunt and grow productive vegetable gardens under his leadership. He kept his mind sharp by doing word puzzles and playing table games with his grandchildren. He will be remembered by them as always being the winner.
Larry is survived by his wife Joyce; daughter Rhonda of Hurricane, UT; sons Kevin (Teri) of Newton, UT; Brent (Suiska) of Ogden, UT; Robert (Marysa) of Vernal, UT; Larry Jr. (Audra) of Heber, UT; Jason (Mya) of St. George, UT; Bryan (Lindsey) of Sandy, UT. Twenty-seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and counting. Sister Marie Crook of Garland, UT; Brothers Jay Rhodes of Washoe Valley, NV and Douglas Rhodes of Kamas, UT.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents Arnold & Marie, and Daughter-in-Law, Kristy.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 27th at 11:00 AM in the Kanab Stake Center, 20 W Center St. A viewing will precede the funeral services starting at 9:30 AM at the same location.
Graveside service and burial will be in the Garland City Cemetery, Garland, Utah on Monday, July 29th at 10:00 AM
A thousand kind words to Zions Way, Hospice and the staff at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Kanab who have lovingly served Larry for such a long time. You have been angels.
In lieu of flowers, please plant some corn and share the harvest with neighbors. Larry would recommend the “Bodacious” variety.
