“After 95 years of cooking, cleaning, toiling, stewing and celebrating…dinner’s on your own, kids!” Louisa “Lou” Eldredge Petersen, 1919-2014
On October 3, 2014, Lou was able to hang up her apron and trade in for a well-earned pair of angel wings. As she passed, she was surrounded by her daughters and the immense love and thoughts of all her many family members.
Lou’s story begins as it ended, with humility and grace in her heart. Born January 16, 1919, at the family home in Thatcher, Utah, her parents, Lucille Lee and Clarence Glenn Eldredge, welcomed Lou as the third child of eight, the second daughter.
She graduated from Bear River High School in 1937. Soon after, she met and fell in love with Vernon “Vernie” Petersen, with whom she married in 1938 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, a union that lasted a blissful and wondrous 59 years. Vernie Pete passed away in 1997. The core of the Petersen clan consists of two sons, Val and Bernie, and two daughters, Carolyn and Betty Dean.
Active in the LDS Church, Thatcher-Penrose Ward, Lou held various and meaningful callings, serving others as often as she could. She loved the DUP and singing.
Lou and her family often celebrated by “Eastering” at Promontory Point and camping at Clear Creek. The house was always lively, full of kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, neighbors, friends and anyone dropping by for a quick visit. She always had a fridge stocked with Pepsi, to go along with her sweet tooth and her love of cooking and entertaining.
Lou was as generous as she was modest, was quick with an opinion as much as her endearing and genuine smile. Her wit and humor will certainly outlive her Earthly experience, as stories and her selfless example will be related by her family and friends for years to come.
She outlived 4 siblings, her loving parents and a granddaughter. She is survived by 2 brothers and a sister, her four children, her 16 grandkids and 37 great-grandkids.
A viewing celebrating Lou’s life will be held Wednesday, October 8, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 9, 2014, at 12:30 p.m., with a viewing from 11 a.m. to noon. Viewings and services will be held at the LDS Thatcher-Penrose 2nd Ward, 11475 West, 10400 North, Thatcher, Utah, 84337.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the amazing staff at IHC Hospice Homecare and Bear River Valley Care Center.
“Toodle-loo for now!”
