Mary Elaine Nelson

Mary Elaine Christensen Nelson, 91, passed away on May 6, 2015 in Legacy House Assisted Living, South Jordan, Utah. She was born on July 6, 1923 in Thatcher, Utah to Melvin & Ivie Christensen.  She married Devere Nelson in Reno, Nevada on March 29, 1947. They were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on March 15, 1957. He later passed away on June 15, 2001.

She was raised in Thatcher, and graduated from Bear River High School. After high school she attended Weber College where she earned her Associate of Arts. She then attended Utah State University and received a Bachelor’s degree.

She worked as a Social Worker for Kid to Dependent Children for 18 months. She was an elementary teacher in Tremonton, Utah for 3 years. She then moved to Nyssa, Oregon where she continued to work as an elementary teacher and retired in 1985.

Elaine loved to read and work in her garden. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, King Colony Book Club, Nyssa Education Association, Oregon Education Association, Garden Club, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held various callings.

She is survived by her children: Gregory (Gail) Nelson and Gwen Nelson; grandchildren Mark (Melinda) Nelson, James (Fabiola) Nelson and Sheryl Nelson; one sister Geniel (L. Jay) Silvester and one brother Porter Christensen.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Roger Nelson, brother Clair Christensen and sisters Floy Scott & Deon Hirschi.

Funeral services for Elaine will be held on Saturday May 9, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Rogers & Taylor Funeral Home Chapel (111 N. 100 E. Tremonton, UT). There will be a viewing held prior to service from 12:30- 1:30 p.m. Interment will take place in the Penrose Cemetery.
