Maurice Jesse Comings passed away beyond the veil peacefully on February 2, 2015, at the age of 90.
Maurice was born on June 28, 1924, in Binghamton, New York to Jesse Comings and Leonora Richards. He spent the early days of his childhood in Fairport, New York before moving to Canandaigua, New York, where he graduated from Canandaigua Academy.
On Maurice’s (Bud’s) paper route he happened to catch a glimpse of Ginny (Virginia) Millard who was to become the love of his life. They began dating until World War II interrupted their plans. He was inducted on February 16, 1943 where he served in the Army Air Corp. as a Staff Sergeant. He served overseas in Italy and North Africa and was honorably discharged on November 23, 1945.
Bud married his sweetheart on June 30, 1946 in Bristol Valley, New York. He and Ginny were the parents of an only daughter, Carol, who was born in Canandaigua on May 22, 1947.
To further his schooling, Maurice attended Hobart and William Smith College and Geneseo State where he received his Master’s Degree in education. He became a dedicated math and science teacher at Victor Central for five years then moved into school administration in what was to become the Phelps-Clifton Springs School District. He served as principal at the elementary and then the middle school.
During retirement, Maurice and Virginia joined the LDS Church, being baptized by their son-in-law Robert Scheppard. Dad served as a home teacher and Sunday School President in the Canandaigua Ward. He was later sealed to Ginny in the Palmyra Temple.
His beloved Ginny died of cancer in 1999. In 2008 he moved to Thatcher, Utah, to live with his daughter, Carol, and son-in-law, Bob Scheppard and to see his granddaughter, Brittany Andrus, and great granddaughter Megan Leigh Vincent, who was a sweet light in his later life,
Dad was a hardworking and caring person; a man of integrity. He also had a great sense of humor although he battled clinical depression for much of his adult life,
He is survived by his daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter. Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, half-sister Betty (Emil) Malanzuck, half-brothers Lester and Gene Johnston and his devoted wife of 53 years, Virginia.
A memorial service will be held on February 7, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Thatcher-Penrose 1st Ward Chapel (11475 W. 10400 N., Thatcher, UT).
The family would like to thank Dr. Chad Merrell, Dr. Todd Miller, the nurses and staff of the Bear River Valley Hospital. The family is also deeply indebted to the Intermountain Hospice Team and Willow Glen Health and Rehabilitation staff. All of these wonderful people gave Dad such tender loving care. Of course, the love and support of our ward family has been overhelming. We also wish to thank the Rogers & Taylor Funeral Home for their guidance and kind service.
The family has requested that memorial donations be made to Hospice at Intermountain Homecare (550 E. 1400 N. Suite G, Logan, UT 84341).
