Mildred Shumway

Mildred Lund Shumway, 98, dearly beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2012. She was born July 21, 1913 in Brigham City, Utah to Orville D. and Mildred Boden Lund, the oldest of five children. Mildred married Jack Shumway December 23, 1936 in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Tremonton, Utah where they raised their five children. She graduated from Weber College and enjoyed her years of teaching elementary school in Garland and Brigham City. Mildred was a faithful member of the LDS church and served in all of the auxiliaries. She especially loved her calling as the Primary chorister for over 20 years. Her most fulfilling church assignments were serving with her husband as missionaries in the Nauvoo, Illinois Mission and as ordinance workers in the Logan Temple. Mildred always had a passion for community service. She was a charter member of the Tremonton Women's Civic League and served for 36 years as a delegate from Box Elder County to the Utah State Women's Legislative Council. She served on the Bear River Valley Council on Aging, the Tri-County Comprehensive Health Board and on the Box Elder Education Foundation. For her many contributions to Tremonton and Bear River Valley, she received the Andrew Rytting Community Service Award in 1963, the General Federation Club Woman of the Year for the State of Utah in 1977; the Governor's Elder American Service Award in 1994 and was awarded the Utah State Woman of Achievement Award in 2002. She was honored as the Bear River Valley Mother of the Year in 1982. Mildred loved her family and was a consummate homemaker. She especially enjoyed the annual family reunions at Bear Lake and Park City as well as cruises throughout the world. She was an avid golfer and served in the Skyway Ladies Golf Association. Other interests included needlepoint, reading, gardening, attending musicals and plays, serving as a Pink Lady at the hospital and giving tours at the North Box Elder County Museum which she was instrumental in creating. She will be remembered for her cheerful, appreciative nature and her love of family, church and everyone with whom she had the privilege of serving. Mildred is survived by her five children: Mary Anne Hunter (Reed) SLC, Pat Boyden (Steve) Paraguay, John Shumway (Diane) SLC, Vera Gene Monson (Gerry) SLC, and David Shumway (Kathy) Pleasant View, Utah, 24 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and by her sister Dorothy Rowe (Philip) and sister-in-law Sara Shumway White. She was preceded in death by her husband, brother, and sisters, O. Dee Lund, Vera Lund Larsen, Maureen Lund Umbreit. The family wishes to express gratitude for the loving care given to Mildred by Wentworth Assisted Living Center and CareSource in Salt Lake City. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 12:00 noon in the LDS Chapel located at 175 South Main, Garland, Utah 84312.
