Our beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather, Ray Stokes Newman, 87, of St. George, returned to his Heavenly Father on Feb 1, 2013 in Brigham City, Utah. Ray was born to Henry Dorney (Ike) and Mary Ann Stokes Newman on May 20, 1925 in Bothwell, Utah. He was raised and educated in Bothwell and Thatcher and graduated from Bear River High School. Ray proudly served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Yorktown during WWII. He married the love of his life, Phyllis Archibald, on September 12, 1944 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He cherished her, and never missed an opportunity to tell her how beautiful she was. Together they welcomed two daughters and a son, and raised their family in Tremonton, Utah. Ray was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He loved the gospel and faithfully served as a counselor in the Bishopric, and as a member of the High Counsel. Ray was a horseman, and a member of the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Posse. He also enjoyed farming, and chariot racing with his son. He loved spending time on his farm with his grandchildren, and taught them the value of hard work. It didn’t matter if they were girls, or big city kids from CA, he had them driving the tractor while he burned ditches, or put up hay. They all have wonderful memories that they will cherish forever. Ray was a hard working businessman, owning three different service stations in Tremonton. He later retired from Thiokol, as a stationary engineer, a trade he learned in the Navy. After retiring, Ray and Phyllis spent their winters with his brothers, pulling their 5th wheel trailers to St. George. Later they made St. George their permanent residence, where they enjoyed square dancing, working in the St. George Temple, their many friends, and spending summers on their Elwood farm. Ray is survived by his wife Phyllis, and children: Dixie (Bob) Hess, of Heber City; Kristine Newman and Alan Pobanz, of Menlow Park, CA; and Tommy Newman, of Elwood. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and a brother Duane Newman. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Mick, Jack, and Dee Newman; a sister Della Petersen; and a special nephew Scott Newman. A special thanks to Ray’s sweet great-granddaughter, Holli Curtis, who tenderly helped care for him at the care center, doing everything she could think of to make the time he spent there more comfortable. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Tremonton South Stake Center (1150 S. Tremont St.). Friends may visit the family Tuesday, February 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Tremonton South Stake Center. Interment, Bothwell Cemetery with Military Honors.
