Sara White

November 9, 1918 — December 29, 2014

SALT LAKE -Sara Shumway White, our sweet, darling, and well-loved mother, grandmother and friend, died on December 29, 2014. Sara was born on November 9, 1918 in Garland, Utah to Mary Ann Thompson and John Jardine Shumway. She adored her parents and siblings, and was so proud and thankful to be a Shumway.

Sara attended Bear River High School, Utah State University, and LDS Business College. While attending Bear River she met and fell in love with Jones Ennis White. They married on August 26, 1937 in the Salt Lake Temple and had five beloved children. Sara had a close-knit network of family and friends, and was wonderful with people. Her quick wit and easy ability to chat endeared her to all who knew her.

Sara was incredibly creative, and it showed in a variety of ways. She enjoyed fabric, color and decorating, and delighted in planning her next project. She made her beautiful home her own through her expertise in furniture refinishing, sewing and decorating. Her projects were always finished with meticulous detail to workmanship and taste.

Her love of design and sewing was also manifest in her sense of fashion. She dressed impeccably and usually wore her own creations. Throughout her life she was admired for her stylish apparel.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many leadership positions, including president of the Relief Society and MIA. She loved music and was a long-time member of the ward choir.

Sara loved life and enjoyed her days. Her difficult times did not define her. She was always pleasant and found joy in others’ successes. She will be deeply missed, but has left a beautiful legacy of humor, faith and love that will live on in all of us that have known and adored her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jones, and her daughter, Dixie Lee. She is survived by her children Jane (Brent) MacKay, Ann (Jack) Cima, Nancy White, Mark (Juli) White, eleven grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Stratford East Ward, 2635 South 1500 East in SLC at 11:00 a.m., a viewing will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral services. Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery, Tremonton, UT.
