Shirley Jean Nelson Bertoldo passed away on Friday, July 12, 2024, in Logan, Utah at the age 95. Jean was born April 2, 1929, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Lloyd Lowry Nelson and Vera Stevens Nelson. She was married to Fred Joseph Bertoldo on December 20, 1952, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fred preceded her in death on July 16, 1980.
Jean was reared and educated in Logan, Utah until her marriage, and then lived in West Newbury, Massachusetts; York, Pennsylvania; and Lima, Ohio where she raised her six children and was active in the community and the LDS church. She held many callings including serving in the Primary presidency, Relief Society presidency, and as a teacher. She and her husband, Fred, served a two-year stake genealogical mission in Fort Waye, Indiana from 1977-1979.
Following the passing of her husband, Jean attended BYU from 1982-1987 and earned an associate degree in library science, worked in libraries in Orem and Provo, and worked as a temple worker in the Provo temple. She was a devoted mother to her six children and a tender and loving grandmother to her 23 grandchildren and her 42 great-grandchildren. Her greatest joy was to spend time with her family.
Jean was preceded in death by her brothers Gerald Nelson, Keith Nelson, and Don Nelson. She is survived by her sister Catherine Aschenbrenner, Tucson, Arizona. Jean is survived her four sons and two daughters: Dr. Robert Nelson Bertolda (Barbara), San Antonio, Texas; John Lowry Bertoldo (Heather), Las Vegas, Nevada; Lisa Anne Hullinger (Rod), Newman Lake, Washington; Dr. Fred Jeffrey Bertoldo (Susanne), Pueblo West, Colorado; Lori Jean Tadd (Shawn), Las Vegas, Nevada; and Mark Andrew Bertoldo, Lindon, Utah.
There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 11 A.M., with interment, in the Logan City Cemetery.
