Spencer K Burton, beloved son, brother, friend, husband and protector, died July 24, 2023.
Spencer was born Dec. 16, 1993, to Val and Kathryn Burton, as the eighth child in a family of nine, and one of dozens of cousins in a large loving family. He grew up in Tremonton, participated in sports and Scouts, wrestled in high school, was the drum major in the marching band and graduated from Bear River High School in 2012.
Spencer is fiercely loyal to those he loves. He is a friend to all his brothers and sisters and a fun-loving uncle who hosted an annual chess tournament for his nieces and nephews at family reunions.
Spencer is fearless. He showed this at a young age, using the tactical advantage of surprise to tackle an older brother many times his size with no fear of repercussions.
He loves baseball and going to ballgames with his family. Everyone who knows him was looking forward to more trips, ballgames, chess and board games, hikes or adventures with Spencer.
Spencer has a quick wit for jokes and puns and is an avid reader. How many Army Reserve grunts have quotes by Charles Dickens tattooed on their arms? “He had expected labour, and he found it, and he did it and made the best of it. In this, his prosperity consisted.” — A Tale of Two Cities.
Spencer is a hard worker and stands ready to help those in need. Everywhere we look, we see something he built or something he helped us fix. He is patient and makes sure the job is done well.
Spencer is an honorable man with a strong moral compass. He’s charitable, thoughtful and compassionate.
Since he was a child, Spencer dreamed of serving his country. On his grade school papers, he wrote that he wanted to be an “Air Force Marine” and be an F-16 fighter pilot. He did not become a pilot, but he served his country with honor, achieving the rank of sergeant in the United States Army Reserve. He served from 2011-2017.
In 2015, as a motor transport operator with the 146th Transportation Company, 364th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, he won local and regional and divisional Best Warrior competitions. At the national competition at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, he pushed his body past its limit. He wanted to go further, but they removed him from the competition and sent him to the hospital — he gave his all.
Sgt. Burton is our American hero.
Spencer is a builder and began creating his own construction company, Canary Construction. It was more than work to him; he found real satisfaction in building and creating. Monuments to his abilities stand across the West and in our homes. What he built, he built well. We thank those who taught him these skills — DJ and Jeremy especially, and those he worked with, including Shoni and his mentor Mike.
Spencer loves the outdoors and knows how to grow an impressive beard. He finds peace in nature. He loves to sit around a campfire with friends, but he also loves to find adventure outdoors. His favorite place in the world is Blue Lake in Uintah National Forest. He loves going to Moab with Shoni on the RZR and to Clear Creek with his family. He recently reached a longtime dream of owning a beautiful Indian Scout motorcycle. He also has a love of trapshooting and kept meticulous records of his 23/25 average.
Spencer is survived by his wife Sariah, parents Val and Kathryn Burton, siblings Roy (Heidi) Burton, Becky (Kevin) Crookston, Valerie (Scott) Andelin, Brian (Serena) Burton, Karyn (Peter) Langford, Craig Burton, Darrell (Lindsey) Burton, Carol (Dylan) Baum and his beloved dog Cali.
