Steven Howard Stokes passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Steve was born June 24, 1947 to Howard and Joyce Stokes in Elwood, Utah. Steve loved working on the farm with his dad and brothers. While on the farm he developed and learned an amazing work ethic that he applied to everything he encountered throughout his life. He loved joking and teasing his brothers and little sister.
He graduated from Bear River High School in 1965 where he loved being a part of the swim team and the FFA club. Steve served honorably in the Hawaii mission where he fell in love with the Polynesian people and their culture. Upon returning home from his mission he completed the most successful business transaction of his life by convincing Betty Deane Petersen to be his eternal companion. Their journey together began on April 24, 1970 in the Logan LDS Temple. Their’s was a true love story to the very end.
Steve graduated from Utah State University in 1972. While in college, Steve and his brother Ross, started renting TV’s and calculators to students and turned this into what eventually became Stokes Brothers. Steve found success with everything he did, whether it was Stokes Brothers or real estate. Steve approached everything in life with a high degree of integrity and cared deeply about those he did business with.
Steve and Betty were blessed with two wonderful children, Nathan Steven and Kathryn Sue. Steve’s children and family were everything to him and he cherished and honored the role of being a father. They made their home in Logan, Utah where they were surrounded by incredible friends and neighbors.
Steve was a wonderful grandfather and found life’s ultimate joy in being with Betty and his eight grandkids (Jackson, Izzy, Jacob, Miles, Lola, Sam, Stella and Isaac) on their many adventures. He was never too busy to enjoy a quiet moment with them and made them each feel like they were the most incredible and important person on earth.
Steve loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and truly lived his testimony. His two favorite callings were serving with his sweetheart Betty Deane in Hong Kong and bringing the Aaronic Priesthood Training Camp to the young men of Cache Valley. Steve deeply loved serving and helping people and could always be found in the service of others.
Steve is survived by his eternal companion Betty Deane; his son Nathan (Katie), daughter Kathryn (Travis) Lish, his eight grandchildren; his mother and father (Joyce and Howard); his brothers Ross (JoAnn), Tom (Debbie), Mike (Cindy), sister Julie Hunter (Stokes) and his foster sister Joann Martinez. He was preceded in death by his brother Randy; his mother and father-in-law Vern and Lou Petersen; and brother-in-law Danny (Carolyn) Bricker.
The funeral services will be held at the Lundstrom Park 2nd Ward (1260 North 1600 East, Logan) on Saturday January 24th at 12:00 Noon. Viewings will be from 6:00-8:00 pm on Friday, January 23rd and Saturday from 10:00-11:30 am, both at the church.
