Sue Jensen

Sue Frances Cowan Jensen, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend died unexpectedly January 6, 2013. Sue was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, January 15, 1937, the first child of Arminda Merrick Cowan and Francis James Cowan. Sue grew up in Salt Lake City where she became an accomplished figure skater, performing in local ice shows with her skating club and spending the summer of 1957 skating in the ice show in Sun Valley, Idaho. She graduated from Granite High School, Class of 1955. Sue attended the University of Utah, where she was active in Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority; Army ROTC Sponsors; Spurs, a sophomore philanthropic organization; and Cwean, a junior honorary group Sue was invited to join based on her scholarship and service to the University. Sue met the love of her life, Karl A. Jensen at the "U". On July 30, 1958, they married and sealed their love for time and all eternity in the Logan LDS Temple, beginning a 54-year partnership. Together they moved to Tremonton, built a home and started a family. Sue's love for her children and grandchildren never has nor ever will know any bounds. These are Sue's lambs. Sue graduated from the "U" with a BS in business education, and taught at Box Elder High School for two years before taking time off to raise six children She returned to professional teaching after her children were older and spent an additional 15 years with the Box Elder School District's Department of Adult and Community Education. Sue was a talented seamstress and a gifted quilter. She had a unique creativity and a spark of perfection that shows in all her work. Many in the valley have been blessed by Sue's talents, whether with a gift of her work or a unique bit of insight from her teaching experience and wisdom. All are priceless. While a full-time mother, she never slowed in her dedication or commitment to serve others. Sue was the recipient of the Rural Woman of the Year Award in 1996 and she received the Andrew Ryting award in 1997. She was a member of the Tremonton Civic League for many years. She was a long-time 4-H leader and served on the Box Elder County Fair Board for more than 20 years. Sue was a leader in the area's scouting programs, serving as den leader and on the District Cub Scout Round Table. In recognition of her service to the scouting program, Sue received the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award. Sue was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a faithful servant to her Heavenly Father. She accepted many callings throughout her life. Sue served in the Tremonton Third Ward as a Laurel advisor, in the Primary Presidency, and on the Tremonton Stake Primary Board . She served as Young Women's President twice, in Brigham City and in Tremonton. Perhaps Sue may be best known to residents of the valley for her tireless service over the past 25 years in the Tremonton Stake Family History Library. Sue had a genuine love for family history and for helping others learn to find their own ancestors. She took as much joy in helping others find their families as she did in finding her own. Sue is survived by her husband, Karl, sons Louis (Salli) Jensen, Ogden, Linford (Stacey) Jensen, Draper, Lee Jensen, Garland, Lane (Angie) Jensen, Tremonton; daughters Mary Ellen Jensen, Tremonton, Ann Jensen, Santa Monica, CA; and eight adored and cherished grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, F. James (LaRue) Cowan, Bountiful, and Pat Morris Wilson, Tujunga, CA, a second cousin who grew up in the Cowan home. She was preceded in death by her parents and a baby sister, Bonnie Lou. Funeral services will be held in the Tremonton Third Ward Chapel (9590 North 6800 West, Tremonton, UT) at 12 noon on Saturday, January 12. A viewing will be held Friday 6 to 8 pm at the Tremonton Third Ward and again the following morning at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 preceding the services. Burial will be in the Bear River City Cemetery. The family requests that contributions may be made to your ward missionary fund.
