Wesley Thompson Hansen, age 89, returned to his Father in Heaven on February 3, 2025, while at his home in Georgetown, Florida.
He was born January 9, 1936, to Walter Wayment Hansen and Mrytle Thompson Hansen in Warren, Utah. He was the middle child of seven children—Rhea Hansen Johnson, David Louis Hansen, Myrelda Jane Hansen Taylor, Shanna Hansen Hemsley Thompson, Earnest Walter Hansen, and Anna Marie Hansen.
Wesley served his country faithfully in Germany during the Korean War and when he returned home, he married his sweetheart, LaRue Ellen Dustin on March 21, 1957, in the Logan, Utah, LDS temple where they were sealed for time and all eternity. They have had a long and wonderful life together where he always cherished his wife of 67 years. He gave her “Pretty flowers for a pretty lady” and even in the twilight of his life, he made sure he told her he loved her and said “Thank You” for taking care of him after his stroke.
Wesley worked in aeronautical manufacturing at Thiokol Chemical Corporation for 33 years where he helped build shuttles for NASA. He loved driving semis and helping other people.
He could fix anything and helped many teenagers to learn to do mechanics and repair vehicles. They would come to the house after school and lovingly called his tree in the yard where they pulled engines, The Midnight Auto Service.
Wesley and his wife supported each other in many endeavors over the years, including taking 250 young women on a plane to Hawaii to camp for a week. They took their tents and equipment and oversaw the entire trip. They loved camping and served as campground hosts in Mantua, Utah and in Virginia. He supported his wife in her business, LaRue’s Country Quilts, for over 60 years. Wesley was the quilt machine mechanic, assistant, and partner to his loving wife.
Wesley and LaRue loved square dancing and had a special friendship with 26 people that they call the “Animal Club.” They met each month and had adventures together for 45+ years. Wesley’s animal was the Turtle. This group still supports and loves one other.
Wesley and LaRue have been blessed with two children, Natalie Hansen Corbett and Melanie Hansen Capener and helped raise three foster children. Wesley and LaRue moved to Florida in August 2008 to help their grandchildren.
Wesley was a valiant member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a sweet soul that loved his Heavenly Father and kept his commandments. He was a High Priest in the church and held several different callings in his life including Scout Master (for over 20 years), High Priest Quorum Counselor, Deacon’s Quorum Advisor, Branch Mission Leader, Sunday School teacher, Home-teacher, and he served as a temple worker in the Orlando Temple.
He had a captivating smile and made friends easily. He loved the Lord. His life was a noble example of charity, love, service and finding peace. He served the people in his communities with love and faith. He genuinely enjoyed interacting with and meeting new people. Wesley was active in supporting the Boy Scout Troop 957 and Cub Scout Troop 957 that was sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He assisted with dinners and activities and always had a smile and a helping hand. He truly followed the Savior’s example and was able to love one another and serve others.
Wesley is survived by his wife, LaRue; daughters, Natalie Hansen Corbett (Craig); and Melanie Hansen Capener (Ralph); seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his sister, Shanna Thompson.
